I bought this specifically for web browsing. Mostly use it to check my fav websites while watching evening tv, uploading/dowloading pictures and to and from work on the bus.

4 Stars MSI Wind U100 – decent little machine
First thing that I found when I opened the package is the itty bitty laptop and the additional memory that I ordered. I STRONGLY recommend spending the extra 15 to 20 bucks to get the extra memory – it makes a massive difference in the performance of any machine.

The issue I had with the memory is that the laptot doesn’t seem to have any place to install it. The documentation doesn’t show where it goes. I found a video on Youtube showing how and where to install it. The apparent terrible thing about upgrading the memory is that it requires removing the back cover. One of the screws is covered by a security tape that says “warranty is void if tampered”.

I contacted tech support. It took two calls. Both times they answered within 5 minutes. The first call, oops, they dropped the phone and accidentally hung up on me. I got the same tech that did this on the second call. The tech support agent said that it is alright to remove the sticker to get to the screw. They have reviewed their policy and it will not void the warranty. They have stopped placing the sticker on new systems. With the cover off, I removed the sticker altogether and got the residue off with goo gone.

The tech support agent said that nothing else is user or locally serviceable. Not even the hard drive.

Next, I backed up the hard drive as delivered using Norton Ghost.

I then replaced the operating system by installing Windows Vista Ultimate to test the capability. It ran just fine. The Vista Performance rating gave it a 1 for the graphics card – or lack of.

I installed XP Pro. Office 2007 Ultimate. Joined the laptot to the domain. It is truly not a desktop replacement, but my wife likes it a lot!

I don’t know why they don’t offer XP Professional as an option for these machines. XP home is simply a broken version.

I wonder what OS these laptot manufacturers will begin shipping when Microsoft finally discontinues XP.

Originally leaning towards an HP mini I decided to go with this little one after discovering all its great features and tons of great reviews. It’s light, fast, has a great screen, the keyboard rocks, I have no problem with the mouse bar and I just love it! I drag it all over the place with me, it into the kitchen rather than printing a recipe and it worked like a charm, into the family room to surf, outside to work, everywhere – battery lasts forever and it doesn’t get hot like my Thinkpad I use for work.

4 Stars You need service plan for the discount pricing…but you can purchase without a plan and still have wireless connectivity…
I live in Atlanta where they have a pilot program for actually selling the laptop in AT&T stores…the sales associate will even tell you…it works without a plan because it has built in wireless card, but you need the plan if you want to connect to the AT&T wireless network.

This netbook is being sold on the AT&T network because it has a BUILT IN WIRELESS ACCESS POINT CARD. Meaning, if you are in a location that can connect to a wireless port (home, work, friends house) then you can access their internet for free because of the standard built in wireless card that comes on practically everyones laptop! However, if you are in a Starbucks or someplace that requires you to pay…you can connect to the AT&T access point and use the MB’s on the plan you have chosen. It’s like having a back up plan when free isn’t available!

It’s like this…have you seen those people using their laptop with those cards sticking out on the side…those are their wireless access point cards…all cell phone companies sell them…and they usually start at over $200 to $300, but they give you a deal if you sign a 2 year service contract. Well if you get this laptop, yours will come built inside and your deal is the laptop at a really discounted price!

I walked through the HP Mini 1150NR purchasing process and no service plan was required. However, when I tried the HP Mini 1151NR with Verizon, I was asked to select a Verizon service plan at the first step. Without a contractual agreement for the service plan during the purchasing process, I don’t see how AT&T can impose anything on me.

Amazon might have made a mistake by not requiring a service plan. If so, they could either apologize and cancel your order or honor your order to express their apology. Either way, no need to worry about paying for something you don’t want. If this is not assuring, read their return policy.

2 Stars Pretty… but big wireless problems
I’m on my third day trying to connect to my wireless router, which my regular laptop, my printer, and my son’s laptop regularly do without any problems. I spent several hours with three different ASUS “tech specialists”, and they simply go through a predefined routine… nice people but thoroughly useless. Two already suggested returning the unit… which is a huge inconvenience.

In two different forums, several other posts report wireless problems. ASUS posted a “fix”, which means they know of this problem, but the fix did not execute in my Eee. Bummer…!

Now the “i” key is sticking…quite a problem!!!

When I purchased this computer Amazon recommended the Crucial 2GB 667 Mhz CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory which I purchased. Only when the computer arrived was it clear that it is IMPOSSIBLE for the average user to install this memory without dismantling the entire computer. I was told by customer service that it was indeed faulty merchandising on Amazon’s part and I could return the memory without penalty. However, Amazon charged me to return the merchandize which they NEVER should have recommended or sold with this machine in the first place. GOOD: Nice and small device. Very easy to carry everywhere – only 2 lbs. Frequently do not need to carry charger because of long battery life – 6hrs max and about 4 hrs if processor-hungry applications running. Very fast – comes from standby in 5 seconds, all normal applications work without any delays – Skype, Firefox, Chrome, Outlook, Picasa, bookreaders, and etc.

BAD: Purchased with Amazon-recommended additional 2GB memory, but can not easily install because 1008HA does not have a memory door. Actually it runs well with 1GB, but I wasted money on additional 2GB. Later Amazon placed a notification on their site that 2GB is difficult to install, but still offers to buy it. Also, personally I do not like hi-gloss screens, but it is not a big issue.

COMPARED TO: Before purchase compared 1008HA to MSI netbooks and found their keyboard wierd – Fn key in place of Ctrl and too small keys “.” and “,”

CONCLUSION: Completely satisfied. Also, I’m considering buying 1101HA later when it becomes available to get 11″ screen with higher resolution and longer battery life.

+ Great keyboard, pretty good track pad (no two finger scrolling, but you can make circular motions with your finger to scroll)

+ Fairly quick as far as netbooks go, even with 1GB RAM

+ Good battery life (4+hrs)

+ Very thin and light (portability is the point, no?)

+ Decent speakers and very quiet fan/hardware

+/- Glossy screen. The glare doesn’t bother me and I’ll gladly take a little glare in exchange for what I perceive as better contrast and colors.

-RAM not easily upgradeable (doesn’t yield that significant a difference in performance though)

-Battery not user-replaceable (this isn’t much of an issue for me as the battery life is pretty good and i don’t know many people who have actually purchased an additional/replacement battery for their laptops)

Note: Some people might complain about the standard netbook screen resolution and lack of graphics processor, but I find the former to be perfectly adequate and the latter to be overkill for netbook purposes (also would reduce the battery life).

I got this netbook like 3 weeks ago and has been working perfectly for till today.

Pros:

- The keyboard. It’s really the best netbook keyboard i’ve tried.

- Mousepad. The scroll works perfect and the zoom utility is great!

- Glossy screen. It looks great from every angle, great bightness and contrast.

- Speakers. They’re very decent for what you can expect in a netbook.

- Software. I love the EEE SuperHybrid Engine wich allows you to change the power consumtion and performance just with the hotkeys. It also can overclock the CPU to 1.75Ghz (still trying to get more than that).

- Battery. I’ve used today for 5:15 and is telling me that I have 20 minutes left. Almost hits the promised time.

Cons:

- 6 dead pixels came with the screen. Also the glossy screen isn’t good at all if you like using your computer on the outdoors.

- The black screen border is a fingerprint magnet.

- Wi-fi doesn’t work on Windows 7.

- The battery and memory are very difficult to replace, and Asus says that if you do it you’ll void the warranty.

I bought this netbook for my wife. It is small. It is elegant. It delivers what it promises.

Looks

The look of the netbook is really great. I have seen some other netbooks and they all looked cheap. This one has a very clean finish and it easily compares to my main $1200 laptop.

Setup:

No problem with XP home setup. We were up and running in 15 mins. Absolutely no problem connecting to the internet, etc.

Noise:

Lots of ppl have complained about the noise. I just cannot believe we got the same model. No noise what so ever. After reading the reviews, I was a bit reluctant to place the order because of the noise thing. But this one is silent. (This might be because of my wife’s prayers too!)

NO CD drive:

This is not a problem. I successfully installed softwares by sharing the CD Drive over the network from my other laptop.

SD Card reader:

This computer has 2 flash memory card readers. I think this is a waste considering the harddisk already has 160 GB! Instead of the second card reader, they could have added a HDMI output!

Speaker / Mic / Webcam:

These built-in features are fantastic for skype. We bought the laptop for this main reason. My wife used to use external mic and external webcam with her previous laptop and it was a drag. This netbook has these things built in and so no cables and no extra space needed. Just wonderful!

1 Star I own XP Version-is it possible to give a ZERO!!!!!
I got an acer aspire one xp with 120 Gb for christmas. i thought it was great at first-but dont be fooled. yes-it is small, light, and portable. BUT wait. here is the list of problems i have had in in only a 1/2 year with it.

1.Crashed and lost all my data twice! (because of this i had to ship it back to the factory!)

2.Webcam is now broken-says that cam is not pluged in to the system!?!?!?!

3.Almost every time i use internet through Wi-Fi it refuses to connect to any secured router anyware! even unsecure

4.gives be Blue Screen Of Death (Google it!!) at least once a week!

5.Batt. lasts only 1.5 hours!

6.Never accepts ethernet cable that works with other computers FINE

7. Touchpad is horrible!

8.Gets BURNING HOT on the underside-left after about 45-55 min of constant use!

9. WAYYY to many pre-installed apps!

10. When i sent it back the hard drive had 120 GB. The Acer people who “fixed” it sent it back with only 105!

BOTTOM LINE-THIS THING (with xp-i havent tested linux on it) IS HORRIBLE!!

BUY A MAC FOR GOD SAKE!

4 Stars The mini that it thinks it a laptop.
This mini, is handy little worker. I worried about being able to read the screen, I have no proble with it. It function well. It fits iinto 4″ deep breifcase leaving enough room to carry by work’s documentation. It use electronic drive no mechanical drives maybe this will mean no hard drive failures. The cover fits tight, ligth potection.

I use electronics pug-in drives like they are CD/DVD/Floppy drives.

Its draw back:

*It comes with a 110 power supply, it needs a DC adapter for the car. About half the time I use my car is my office.

*It comes with PJ-45 no phone line, it needs the adpater to PR–45 to have a USB to phone or PJ-45 to phone line.

Software manufactures need to put programs on electron drives.

Insure you back up inportant data, not foresure data is retreavable if hard drive dies.

Speaker is weak.

I think it needs a cooler.

For around $50 you can get a USB DVD/CD writer drive.

The * items is why I gave it a 4.

Needs a wrist/waist/suiside strap incase it wants to jump/fall to floor.

Heed a stand so I can use it like presentation portfolio.

My husband uses this for work when he is on the road. I wouldn’t want a laptop this small for everyday use. Note it does not have a DVD drive, so if you need to install anti-virus you will need to download it another way. We went and bought one for 25.00 here at Amazon.
