2 Stars Pretty… but big wireless problems
I’m on my third day trying to connect to my wireless router, which my regular laptop, my printer, and my son’s laptop regularly do without any problems. I spent several hours with three different ASUS “tech specialists”, and they simply go through a predefined routine… nice people but thoroughly useless. Two already suggested returning the unit… which is a huge inconvenience.

In two different forums, several other posts report wireless problems. ASUS posted a “fix”, which means they know of this problem, but the fix did not execute in my Eee. Bummer…!

Now the “i” key is sticking…quite a problem!!!

When I purchased this computer Amazon recommended the Crucial 2GB 667 Mhz CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory which I purchased. Only when the computer arrived was it clear that it is IMPOSSIBLE for the average user to install this memory without dismantling the entire computer. I was told by customer service that it was indeed faulty merchandising on Amazon’s part and I could return the memory without penalty. However, Amazon charged me to return the merchandize which they NEVER should have recommended or sold with this machine in the first place. GOOD: Nice and small device. Very easy to carry everywhere – only 2 lbs. Frequently do not need to carry charger because of long battery life – 6hrs max and about 4 hrs if processor-hungry applications running. Very fast – comes from standby in 5 seconds, all normal applications work without any delays – Skype, Firefox, Chrome, Outlook, Picasa, bookreaders, and etc.

BAD: Purchased with Amazon-recommended additional 2GB memory, but can not easily install because 1008HA does not have a memory door. Actually it runs well with 1GB, but I wasted money on additional 2GB. Later Amazon placed a notification on their site that 2GB is difficult to install, but still offers to buy it. Also, personally I do not like hi-gloss screens, but it is not a big issue.

COMPARED TO: Before purchase compared 1008HA to MSI netbooks and found their keyboard wierd – Fn key in place of Ctrl and too small keys “.” and “,”

CONCLUSION: Completely satisfied. Also, I’m considering buying 1101HA later when it becomes available to get 11″ screen with higher resolution and longer battery life.

5 Stars Best balance of portability and usability in a netbook
+ Great keyboard, pretty good track pad (no two finger scrolling, but you can make circular motions with your finger to scroll)

+ Fairly quick as far as netbooks go, even with 1GB RAM

+ Good battery life (4+hrs)

+ Very thin and light (portability is the point, no?)

+ Decent speakers and very quiet fan/hardware

+/- Glossy screen. The glare doesn’t bother me and I’ll gladly take a little glare in exchange for what I perceive as better contrast and colors.

-RAM not easily upgradeable (doesn’t yield that significant a difference in performance though)

-Battery not user-replaceable (this isn’t much of an issue for me as the battery life is pretty good and i don’t know many people who have actually purchased an additional/replacement battery for their laptops)

Note: Some people might complain about the standard netbook screen resolution and lack of graphics processor, but I find the former to be perfectly adequate and the latter to be overkill for netbook purposes (also would reduce the battery life).

I got this netbook like 3 weeks ago and has been working perfectly for till today.

Pros:

- The keyboard. It’s really the best netbook keyboard i’ve tried.

- Mousepad. The scroll works perfect and the zoom utility is great!

- Glossy screen. It looks great from every angle, great bightness and contrast.

- Speakers. They’re very decent for what you can expect in a netbook.

- Software. I love the EEE SuperHybrid Engine wich allows you to change the power consumtion and performance just with the hotkeys. It also can overclock the CPU to 1.75Ghz (still trying to get more than that).

- Battery. I’ve used today for 5:15 and is telling me that I have 20 minutes left. Almost hits the promised time.

Cons:

- 6 dead pixels came with the screen. Also the glossy screen isn’t good at all if you like using your computer on the outdoors.

- The black screen border is a fingerprint magnet.

- Wi-fi doesn’t work on Windows 7.

- The battery and memory are very difficult to replace, and Asus says that if you do it you’ll void the warranty.

3 Stars Could be better
Barely acceptable considering its price, but, at least the model that I bought, has several problem features (in order of increasing inconvenience):

(1) The keys are painted gray against a black background. Poor visibility unless you have intense lighting.

(2) There is no pilot lamp for Caps Lock. Thus to find out the status you need to test type and then maybe delete. Yes, you can download a third party free program to put an icon on the desktop, but you have to activate it every time you need it.

(3) No matter how hard I tried it was impossible to disable the touch pad and use an external mouse. Even when the touch pad’s app said “Disabled” the darn thing was still active. I even removed the touch pad’s app and still nothing. Thus, the pointer jumped messing up a document being composed if my thumb accidentally brushed against the pad.

(4) The System Restore feature does not work. I tried several Windows XP Restore points and every time I got the irritating message: “Your computer cannot be restored to SetPoint xyz”!

(5) The System Recovery using the hard disk partition says “Disable Boot Booster in BIOS” first. How can an ordinary user do that without specific instructions?

Regretted buying this PC and gave it away in frustration.

5 Stars Works Great
This is just what you would expect from a net book. I’m not sure it really has a 7 hour battery life, but the battery is certainly lasting longer than other lap tops I have had. I usually end up plugging it in after four or five hours so I haven’t tested to see how long it would last before running out.

The keyboard does take a little getting used to. I keep hitting the arrow keys instead of the shift key but I am getting better at using it every day. The keyboard is only a little smaller than full sized and it isn’t hard to switch back and forth between my ASUS and my full sized desk top.

I did install the 2 gig memory upgrade. It took several attempts to get it to work. You have to make sure it is fully inserted in the slot and you have to re-start in set up mode for the computer to recognize the upgrade.

It is slow to start up and to turn on programs, but once they are running, it isn’t a problem. Perfect for traveling if what you want to do is run word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and internet searches.

This is a fantastic little machine for a great price! After I got one, my sister and in-laws got one as well. The only gripe I have about mine is the shift key placement on the keyboard, and they fixed that on the models with the chiclet keyboard.

1 Star Blue Screen within 10 days of purchase
I am actually very disappointed with this product. I did some research and made sure it was ok from others’ review and when i got it, i was excited but noticed it was a bit slow. I continued to check to make sure the memory and harddrive were correct as indicated and there didn’t seem to be any problems either; so I took with me on the road.

problems I have experienced

1. battery only last 3.5 hours; not as marketed 7 hours

2. as a new computer, opening the application is quite slow when the computer just reboots

3. blue screen within 7 days and I did not even install any other softwares. I have only been using interet & MSN messenger and downloading pictures from my camera, which is way slow

4. downloading pictures through USB (not the SD card slot) takes more than an hour for some 500MB files???!!!

5. I am hearing noises from the computer, I am guessing it’s from the HD but since I am on the road I am not able to have an expert to check and confirm

It is light and stylish I have to say, but as a new computer, it shouldn’t work so un-professionally. I have had Acer and Dell and I understood after a year or so the performance is as not ideal as new, but this EPC… it’s worse than the performances of my old computers now… I am going to have to return if problem continues.

Portable, plenty of storage for netbook, good battery life.

I’m not sure why people insist on comparing the $300 netbook to a $1000 mac. This is less than 1/3 of the price. No pun intended, but let’s compare apples to apples.

This is fine for web surfing, emails, and ms office on the go. More functional than a PDA, but less powerful compared to a laptop.

5 Stars Works Great
This is just what you would expect from a net book. I’m not sure it really has a 7 hour battery life, but the battery is certainly lasting longer than other lap tops I have had. I usually end up plugging it in after four or five hours so I haven’t tested to see how long it would last before running out.

The keyboard does take a little getting used to. I keep hitting the arrow keys instead of the shift key but I am getting better at using it every day. The keyboard is only a little smaller than full sized and it isn’t hard to switch back and forth between my ASUS and my full sized desk top.

I did install the 2 gig memory upgrade. It took several attempts to get it to work. You have to make sure it is fully inserted in the slot and you have to re-start in set up mode for the computer to recognize the upgrade.

It is slow to start up and to turn on programs, but once they are running, it isn’t a problem. Perfect for traveling if what you want to do is run word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and internet searches.

1 Star Blue Screen within 10 days of purchase
I am actually very disappointed with this product. I did some research and made sure it was ok from others’ review and when i got it, i was excited but noticed it was a bit slow. I continued to check to make sure the memory and harddrive were correct as indicated and there didn’t seem to be any problems either; so I took with me on the road.

problems I have experienced

1. battery only last 3.5 hours; not as marketed 7 hours

2. as a new computer, opening the application is quite slow when the computer just reboots

3. blue screen within 7 days and I did not even install any other softwares. I have only been using interet & MSN messenger and downloading pictures from my camera, which is way slow

4. downloading pictures through USB (not the SD card slot) takes more than an hour for some 500MB files???!!!

5. I am hearing noises from the computer, I am guessing it’s from the HD but since I am on the road I am not able to have an expert to check and confirm

It is light and stylish I have to say, but as a new computer, it shouldn’t work so un-professionally. I have had Acer and Dell and I understood after a year or so the performance is as not ideal as new, but this EPC… it’s worse than the performances of my old computers now… I am going to have to return if problem continues.

5 Stars Fantastic machine
This is a fantastic little machine for a great price! After I got one, my sister and in-laws got one as well. The only gripe I have about mine is the shift key placement on the keyboard, and they fixed that on the models with the chiclet keyboard.

3 Stars Could be better
Barely acceptable considering its price, but, at least the model that I bought, has several problem features (in order of increasing inconvenience):

(1) The keys are painted gray against a black background. Poor visibility unless you have intense lighting.

(2) There is no pilot lamp for Caps Lock. Thus to find out the status you need to test type and then maybe delete. Yes, you can download a third party free program to put an icon on the desktop, but you have to activate it every time you need it.

(3) No matter how hard I tried it was impossible to disable the touch pad and use an external mouse. Even when the touch pad’s app said “Disabled” the darn thing was still active. I even removed the touch pad’s app and still nothing. Thus, the pointer jumped messing up a document being composed if my thumb accidentally brushed against the pad.

(4) The System Restore feature does not work. I tried several Windows XP Restore points and every time I got the irritating message: “Your computer cannot be restored to SetPoint xyz”!

(5) The System Recovery using the hard disk partition says “Disable Boot Booster in BIOS” first. How can an ordinary user do that without specific instructions?

Regretted buying this PC and gave it away in frustration.

5 Stars I don’t know why people compare this to $1000 laptops
Portable, plenty of storage for netbook, good battery life.

I’m not sure why people insist on comparing the $300 netbook to a $1000 mac. This is less than 1/3 of the price. No pun intended, but let’s compare apples to apples.

This is fine for web surfing, emails, and ms office on the go. More functional than a PDA, but less powerful compared to a laptop.

4 Stars Netbook is great but keyboard is cheap plastic
I have no problems what so ever as far as performance and stability.

The only biggest concern is that when i type i can see the whole body of the keyboard shaky. I bought the chiclet keyboard when i saw apple have the same, but the quality of workmanship at asus is way pathetic vs apple. I think they need to re-design this for sure, users won’t like it.

I have typically : Yahoo and MSN messangers and Skype and 3-4 tabs of Firefox running all at the same time with no issues, although the CPU is running at about 80% when i use skype with video. So for performance its great for my use.

Also this netbook starts to have choppy video when i try any HD video. I expect that, afterall when do you expect out of a 1.6Ghz single core CPU, however regualar youtube videos runs fine.

Overall i am happy but disappointed from Asus for the chiclet keyboard.

Great computer for $[...] rebate. Sound quality ain’t the best but it really does a nice job overall. Super nice is the ability to upgrade ram to 2 gig for $20 and 2 screws. See Youtube for instructions. Easy change on hard drive as well. This alone make it a great choice. Enjoy!

It is a neat piece of equipment. It runs decently, very simple, and has almost all of the features you can use. My main purpose of purchasing it is to use it for my online class activities. When I used it for live online voice chats, the feedback coming from the other line (which is my professor) appeared to be very choppy and staticky. I tried to observe and give it several more tries before deciding on what to do with it. I even upgraded it into a 2gig memory to see if the choppy feedback was just a one time event. I used it again the following week of my classes and even recorded the whole session, there has been no improvement. It may be the hardware because the drivers for the sound system were updated. Just didn’t worked out for me due to the reason for my purchase.

2 Stars Just Ok. Keyboard and touchpad sucks
I bought this notebook 2 weeks back without the $30 rebate. Today I saw the Acer Aspire One 10 inch notebook at the same price with a much better quality and finish (with metal body for handrest) at Costco. Simply put, This Asus at $350 at nowhere in front of the Acer. Details below:

Pros:

-Intel Atom processor does its bit. It powerful enough unless you run multiple apps together.

- Asus has a 1 button power saving control

- battery lasts long enough, but dont go for the 7 hr figure, 3.5 hrs is the normal.

- not too heavy

Cons:

- the chicklet keyboard just sucks. The support plastic of the keys is loose(design issue) and the whole keyboard goed up and down while typing making noises similar to WW-II typewriters. I am really upset with this keyboard.

- The first time I booted up the machine, within 5 mins it crashed making a squeaking noise, most likely from the HDD. It does make that squeaking noise if I tilt the machine at a particular angle but didn’t crash again yet. I guess its a cheap hard disk inside.

- The display is not very sharp, just ok.

- The touch pad gets automatically clicked. I guess the sensitivity of the touch pad is not good. I tried to customize it from the tool provided, but to no help. The touch pad buttons are too hard.

Overall, I say Asus has tried to make a big profit out of this machine by giving poor quality cheap components. Its not a notebook you’d like to carry in meetings. Acer’s Aspire One is more suited for that.

4 Stars Excellent netbook
Computer is great. Well built. None of the “shaking” issues that others have found. Shocked at how great the picture quality is on the monitor. It isn’t a huge monitor, but it is extremely bright and clear. Keyboard feels comfortable to type with. Upgraded to 2GB of RAM (simple to do), but memory usage remains low, even when I’ve got a number of apps running (gotta love Win XP). Takes a little getting used to the sensitivity on the touchpad, but the two finger scrolling is a nice feature. I haven’t looked into lowering the sensitivity on the touchpad yet. Occasionally, machine has an hourglass for 3-5 seconds when in battery mode (not sure exact power settings at the time it happens), but it is quite bearable. Computer looks nice, though the cover is very shiny and picks up fingerprints quite easily.

I’d recommend it. For the price (with the Amazon/Asus rebate), it is worth it. For other reviews, see link below. Looks like with Amazon as the seller (and the lower price), for some reason there aren’t as many reviews. The link below for another seller on Amazon seems to have all the good reviews.

I bought my wife this computer. I really liked it when ever I used it. So I also purchased one for myself. They both work great. But I bought the 2Gig ram upgrade for mine. I recommend the upgrade. There is a difference thats worth the 25 bucks. I’m going to upgrade hers too.

This computer has all the “Bells & whistles”. It’s got a quality feel to it too! I highly recommend one.

4 Stars Pleased with performance but not shipping
USPS seemed to be dragging their feet as the tracker showed “Arrival Scan” followed by at least a five-day wait. We chose the free shipping, so cannot complain about the wait.

I was dissatisfied with the packing method however, where the boxed-up computer was placed in the shipping carton with no packing material surrounding the computer box, allowing it to slide around. Believing that the shipping carton was probably not always handled gently, I imagined how the computer box could have been bouncing around inside the carton. It should have been protected with cushioning material.

I enjoy the little netbook and am happy with its performance. I installed the 2 gigabyte memory card prior to the first use. Boot-up is surprizingly quick, and the processor is fast. After setting it up on my wireless network the first time, it quietly finds the network on each startup. I’m using a USB mouse because it’s quicker for me than the touch pad. I’ll probably purchase a Bluetooth mouse soon. When using the touch pad however, I find no problems with usability after getting used to it. The keyboard takes a little getting used to due to size and location of keys, but I expected that. You just have to be careful not to inadvertently hit the “Enter” key instead of “Shift” or you might close a transaction prematurely. I plan to use the netbook for paperless Geocaching, so loaded GSAK and it runs faster on the netbook than it does on my desktop machine. I’m looking forward to using it in the car to help navigate and provide Cache details in addition to the bluetooth connectivity allowing transfer of data to the Palm or Garmin GPS. I believe it will be worth the money.

4 Stars Best Part is the Battery
This little computer has an outstanding six cell battery (beware of the Best Buy version which has a lower capacity six cell battery). I can use this computer on and off for a few days and the battery will still have 30-40 percent of charge left. Screen resolution can be changed to fit larger pages in. Screen is nice and bright. Speakers aren’t that good. You have to turn up volume to max just to hear sound at a low volume. I purchased a set of HP USB powered mini notebook speakers which work great. Trackpad is good with two fingered scrolling instead of the usual side scroll which I always found annoying. Buttons on trackpad take hard pressure to click. Keyboard has nice layout without too much flexing. Computer seems nicely built and solid. It is a bit thick and heavy, but it is worth it since the battery is so good.

5 Stars Goes everywhere, Does everything
I love the Eee 1000HE. It goes everywhere with me, unlike the large 6lb tanks that I have used in the past. Battery life is incredible; to maximize, turn off the bluetooth and wifi, turn down the screen intensity, and set on power save mode Fn(spacebar). I got a real 9 hrs, time after time. Buy the 2GB Crucial memory (cheap, and installed in about 4 min.), a bluetooth mouse, an external USB DVD drive, and a DIFFERENT CARRYING CASE. A case that will hold a few more gadgets like gps puck and your digital camera, and has a carrying strap and handle. You can always crank up the speed by hitting the Fn(spacebar). The included Docs are poor, but there is an Online EeePC community that provides excellent info and how to’s and tweeks. I did not know for a few weeks that the Eee 1000HE has an SD card reader. Since the keyboard is small (but still works), I find that turning off the touchPad prevents errors. I have hooked up my wifi camera, the bluetooth printer, bluetooth gps, and I continue to be amazed. I have data stored in the online Asus 10gb cloud (free), but have not really seen the need because of the 160gb onboard. It is no wonder this has become the #1 best selling laptop on Amazon.
