I will compare to the NC10, the NC20 is bigger, heavier, less battery life but still good around 5:30 of regular use maybe more if you change the brightness on the screen settings, excellent screen resolution (1280 x 800)for 12.1″ !and better/higher sound for sure. Just be aware that the left side of the laptop generate a flow of mildly hot air. Of course the screen is the main thing here and I think is worth it if you want to use the laptop to see movies or read Open Office documents. It is very easy to open and upgrade the hard drive or the memory 2GB max. The trackpad has the same size of the NC10 black special edition but bigger than the regular NC10. The keyboard is great as the all NC10. note: They changed the position of the windows icon on the keyboard. The VIA Nano performs very similar to the Intel Atom.

A 10.1 inches monitor was definitely something too small for my eyes, now I am 53… and for a 12.1 monitors you had to choose one of those expensive notebooks. But this Samsung NC20 appeared and I simply went for it without waiting for other customer reviews. I read some reviews on other sites, all of them OK, and followed my daughter’s advice: she has a 10.1 NC10, the pink one (perfect for a young girl) and is always telling marvelous things about her tiny netbook

Well, now I can start doing the same. It’s a great computer, perfect for what it is meant to.

The chasis is solid, the system keeps cold, has long battery life (5 hours or so, I am not enough disciplined to measure it with minutes and seconds), a clear and comfortable keyboard and a silent processor/disk

Two small cons:

1. The monitor is too glossy for my taste.

2. The cover traps all your fingerprints, mercilessly.

I wanted a netbook or laptop to replace an old laptop we used in our kitchen. I wanted something that was …

1) Light weight and portable.

2) Easy to carry and/or pack when I travel.

3) Quick accessing the internet for news and email.

4) Would run Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

5) Had an easy to read screen, and

6) Cost less than $800.

I strongly considered 10″ netbooks by several manufacturers (Samsung, HP, Asus, etc.) but decided I wanted a larger screen after I found myself “leaning in” to read the screen on the 10″ netbooks. Laptops had bigger screens, but were LOTS heavier (>5.5 lbs) and would be much less convenient both in my kitchen and to travel with. Getting a 12-14″ screen in a light weight laptop or a Mac was going to easily cost me more than $1000. The Samsung NC20 fit my criteria the best. I was a bit apprehensive to buy it though as I was unable to see one locally. In the end, I decided to take the plunge.

Boy am I glad I did. This computer is simply great. Perfect size, very portable and light weight. Screen is easy to read and very bright. One complaint I had heard about the NC20 was that the speakers weren’t very good, but I would disagree with this; they’re fine! The keyboard is easy to use, even with my big fingers. Battery life is excellent. In addition, the setup was a breeze. I’ve set up a lot of computers in my time (both PC and Mac), and honestly this was by far the easiest (even easier than my Mac’s)! Microsoft Office went on fine, easy setup of my wireless network and file sharing with my desktop. I also loaded Norton Internet Security on it, and it runs just fine (no noticeable reduction in speed). It has handled everything I’ve given it just great!

I added a USB-CD/DVD drive and a USB-mouse (although it has built-in Bluetooth), and these work great. When purchasing I thought about upgrading the memory to 2GB but decided to wait and see. Now that I have it, I see no need for this currently (but it’s nice to have the option for the future).

My NC20 is currently sitting on my kitchen table, running Microsoft Office just fine and accessing my emails and the internet like a champ! If you’re looking for a secondary computer, laptop or netbook for doing simple tasks and travel like I was, I would highly recommend the NC20.

Our average is having 3-4 computers/laptops at a time because we need them for work. We have two old/1st generation macbooks (quite heavy) and needed something easy to carry around. We have a quite good knowledge about computers, read many reviews, and became fascinated about the NC-10, which is a kind of “mystery” computer that is not sold in electronics stores (at least around here).

The screen is the best but does not support full HD (as the HP), which is bad because we cannot connect it to our flat screen TV to watch movies from Netflix. The mouse pad is way to small!!! The keyboard is as hard as the mouse keys… Construction seems sturdy but it does not matter much because Amazon packing was a joke and is a miracle that the computer arrived working.

It seems that we have to pay 15% of restocking fee to return it then the solution is pray to God to make it worth $399 on a $329 worth netbook (same as the Accer).

Very, very nice netbook. My wife loves it. One problem which it, which apparently many people have (and I have too) is the wireless card. It is erratic and I have to restart and repair my wireless networks every so often. The problem I see with it is that if it is called a netbook, then why won’t it stay connected? One thing I did for problem was to apply all Microsoft updates and that seems to have cured the problem.

I read all the other reviews before I bought and cannot say any more about it, except that all the 100+ reviews where right.Fantastic screen is on top of my list. Excellent, one limitation, but that not what I bought it for. I love to edit video and make slide shows. This is NOT the computer for that. The video card can’t keep up the show presentation. To many jumps, hesitations etc. But thats something I should have realized, since I spend top dollars to install a gamers video card on my home computer. Bottom line, the NC 10-14 is great.KAH

I bought this specifically for web browsing. Mostly use it to check my fav websites while watching evening tv, uploading/dowloading pictures and to and from work on the bus.

4 Stars MSI Wind U100 – decent little machine
First thing that I found when I opened the package is the itty bitty laptop and the additional memory that I ordered. I STRONGLY recommend spending the extra 15 to 20 bucks to get the extra memory – it makes a massive difference in the performance of any machine.

The issue I had with the memory is that the laptot doesn’t seem to have any place to install it. The documentation doesn’t show where it goes. I found a video on Youtube showing how and where to install it. The apparent terrible thing about upgrading the memory is that it requires removing the back cover. One of the screws is covered by a security tape that says “warranty is void if tampered”.

I contacted tech support. It took two calls. Both times they answered within 5 minutes. The first call, oops, they dropped the phone and accidentally hung up on me. I got the same tech that did this on the second call. The tech support agent said that it is alright to remove the sticker to get to the screw. They have reviewed their policy and it will not void the warranty. They have stopped placing the sticker on new systems. With the cover off, I removed the sticker altogether and got the residue off with goo gone.

The tech support agent said that nothing else is user or locally serviceable. Not even the hard drive.

Next, I backed up the hard drive as delivered using Norton Ghost.

I then replaced the operating system by installing Windows Vista Ultimate to test the capability. It ran just fine. The Vista Performance rating gave it a 1 for the graphics card – or lack of.

I installed XP Pro. Office 2007 Ultimate. Joined the laptot to the domain. It is truly not a desktop replacement, but my wife likes it a lot!

I don’t know why they don’t offer XP Professional as an option for these machines. XP home is simply a broken version.

I wonder what OS these laptot manufacturers will begin shipping when Microsoft finally discontinues XP.

Originally leaning towards an HP mini I decided to go with this little one after discovering all its great features and tons of great reviews. It’s light, fast, has a great screen, the keyboard rocks, I have no problem with the mouse bar and I just love it! I drag it all over the place with me, it into the kitchen rather than printing a recipe and it worked like a charm, into the family room to surf, outside to work, everywhere – battery lasts forever and it doesn’t get hot like my Thinkpad I use for work.

If you want to take advantage of ATT’s high speed mobile service, you can purchase it separately and this netbook can then work at the higher speed. 4 Stars You need service plan for the discount pricing…but you can purchase without a plan and still have wireless connectivity…
I live in Atlanta where they have a pilot program for actually selling the laptop in AT&T stores…the sales associate will even tell you…it works without a plan because it has built in wireless card, but you need the plan if you want to connect to the AT&T wireless network.

This netbook is being sold on the AT&T network because it has a BUILT IN WIRELESS ACCESS POINT CARD. Meaning, if you are in a location that can connect to a wireless port (home, work, friends house) then you can access their internet for free because of the standard built in wireless card that comes on practically everyones laptop! However, if you are in a Starbucks or someplace that requires you to pay…you can connect to the AT&T access point and use the MB’s on the plan you have chosen. It’s like having a back up plan when free isn’t available!

It’s like this…have you seen those people using their laptop with those cards sticking out on the side…those are their wireless access point cards…all cell phone companies sell them…and they usually start at over $200 to $300, but they give you a deal if you sign a 2 year service contract. Well if you get this laptop, yours will come built inside and your deal is the laptop at a really discounted price!

I walked through the HP Mini 1150NR purchasing process and no service plan was required. However, when I tried the HP Mini 1151NR with Verizon, I was asked to select a Verizon service plan at the first step. Without a contractual agreement for the service plan during the purchasing process, I don’t see how AT&T can impose anything on me.

Amazon might have made a mistake by not requiring a service plan. If so, they could either apologize and cancel your order or honor your order to express their apology. Either way, no need to worry about paying for something you don’t want. If this is not assuring, read their return policy.

4 Stars Currently my favorite netbook, but with some problems for me
Most current netbooks have a lot of similarities–with the same processor (Atom N270), similar size hard drives (most new with 160 GB) and similar LCD panel resolutions. The HP Mini-Note 2140 is no exception to most of these base tech specs except for the LCD panel resolution of 1024×576 (instead of 1024×600 like most others in the 10″ range).

So why is this 2140 my current marginal favorite in comparison, after trying out friends’ and those available in stores?

- Unlike most manufacturers, HP really got the keyboard right. The shift keys and enter key are large and where you expect them to be. Unlike other manufacturers, things are in place for productive touch typing and the 92%-size of standard laptop keyboard is pretty easy to adjust to.

- The exterior casing is made of solid-feeling aluminum instead of plastic. The netbook feels more durable and looks beautiful in comparison to most netbooks which can look a bit cheap in my opinion. The aluminum adds a few ounces to the weight, but mine is still under 3 pounds with the 6 cell battery.

- The netbook has a good selection of ports and connectors on the outside. It comes with an ExpressCard/54 slot which no other netbook currently does as far as I’m aware. Most of the other connectors are similar to other netbooks. It also has 2 USB ports, an analog (vga) monitor out jack (see below for my complaints about it), an SD card slot and separate mic and audio out jacks.

You would think I would be raving about this netbook, but I ran into some problems with my computer that make it less usable.

I am unable to get any resolution above 1024×768 on any of the three external monitors I’ve tried it on. Two of the monitors are 1280×1024 resolution and one is 1440×900. This is even with ONLY the external monitor enabled. At the same time, my 4 year old notebook and my desktop detect and make correct resolutions available for the 1280×1024 monitors (my other monitor is a slightly odd resolution). Updating drivers seems to make no difference (the one from HPs site or the Intel drivers). The monitor will not detect correctly and free software (Monitor Asset Manager) that bypasses the windows registry to query the plug’n'play monitor properties directly cannot detect the external monitors correctly on this piece of hardware (works fine on both my other computers).

It seems other people are not having the same kinds of problems that I am encountering, so I was either the lucky recipient of a computer with some highly ingrained software or hardware problems, or it has difficulty playing nice with some monitors that have pretty standard resolutions.

Unfortunately, HP support is somewhere between awful and abysmal and has not chosen to make any reply to my support request email aside from an automatic confirmation they received it (and it has been over two weeks).

A more minor quibble is that the built-in LCD panel resolution is only 1024×576 instead of 1024×600 like most other netbooks. Though it’s only a 24-line difference, on this small of a screen every pixel counts more than on a larger monitor. At least the resolution is properly advertised so you know what you’re getting.

The touchpad also has it’s buttons on the side, which some people dislike but didn’t bother me.

It’s overall a good netbook. If HP would fix my external monitor issues, I’d probably think it was the best one currently available. As it stands, it’s a good, but mine is flawed and my experience with HP’s support has been very poor so far.

All in all, this is a great little device. Powerful, compact, well thought out. BUT–and this is a BIG but….could not get the HP Mini 2140 to print to an fairly new HP Photosmart C6180 printer. Even after spending literally days on the phone with HP’s engineers in Bangalore, this is a nonstarter, and I ultimately returned the device. There’s just no excuse for this, particularly since the printer accepts jobs on our home network from our Macbook Pros and from our Thinkpads, but NOT from this nice, new handy, dandy HP Mini.

5 Stars Smooth metal casing and elegant design in a netbook form factor
Bought one of the first 2140s that shipped in February 2009. Have already taken it on a 1 month trip to China. This is my 1st netbook, and 5th notebook that I have owned since 2002.

The portability and convenience of the 10″ form factor is great. The screen is bright, and when compared to other netbooks – the HP Mini 2140′s metal exterior makes it a stand out. I had a chance to sample and feel many other netbooks while in Hong Kong and while some of them may have a few things in their favor, I realized the HP 2140 was the best choice for me.

No problems connecting to any wireless / wired networks in hostels / hotels / coffee shops. The split trackpad button layout has not been a problem to adjust to. Both buttons have a nice rubbery feel/response. The quick battery recharge to 90% has been good. 6-cell battery provides a good tilt, now I don’t need to bring a CoolPad to angle the keyboard!! The 1024×576 is a minor quibble. I can’t imagine reading the text on the high-resolution 1366×768 display. Contrrary to some opinions, I prefer the coating/glass/whatever that is on the screen – easy to clean, and I don’t worry about touching it.

I have not tried an external monitor or printing with this netbook, so I am unable to comment on those aspects.

Soon – I will test the ExpressCard 54 slot with a Creative Labs audio card that I am using on another notebook. UPDATE – X-Fi Audio Xtreme card has been tested and works!

Performance wise – only issues are a little lag if running too much video and a couple of blue screens when too many Google Chrome tabs were open along with other programs. Memory overload of some sort. But easy to avoid, once one knows the limitations of the processor. Used the netbook to talk with a handheld SkyPE Ipevo phone in many places. Handy!

One annoyance (That I was aware of before buying) is that to use the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys one must use the FN key at the same time. Which is swappable with the LEFT corner CTRL key (Not the RIGHT CTRL key, which would make it a one handed motion – unless I missed a setting) in the BIOs – but still annoying – as the smaller screen requires more scrolling. The trackpad scroll works well though. Other netbooks have dedicated PAGE-UP/DOWN keys.

I also own an HP DV6000 series limited edition white notebook – which is slick but — after experiencing the aluminum/metal feel of the the HP Mini – I will say that more note/netbooks should be built with metal over plastic. Enjoy!

4 Stars Perfect Travel Computer
I’ve used this on three trips from the States to the Middle East (20+ hours in a plane/airport each way).

- Keyboard: The keyboard (92%) is plenty big. I tried a friend’s Acer (80-something% size) and it was WAY TOO SMALL. I haven’t noticed a big difference between this 92% and my 100% on my home computer – which is a bigger HP laptop.

- Touch Pad: I read other reviews that didn’t care for the touch pad, but I like it. I had to get used to where to put my finger on the right side for scrolling, but that is very minor. I accidently touch it once in a while during typing, but I’ve found that typical to all touch pads on laptops.

- Battery: I did not opt for the larger battery, and I’m averaging at least 4 hours per charge. I’ve spent tons of hours in planes and airports without access to an outlet. I don’t need the bigger battery. Save your money and opt just for the regular battery.

- Screen: This would be 5 STARS if the screen were higher resolution. I’ve heard the HD screen may come out later in the year, but don’t wait. This is good enough for a travel computer – not quite good enough for a full-time computer.

This is a great travel computer and well worth the price.

4 Stars So far so good
I’ve had my new HP 2140 for about a week now and so far so good. Setup was like any new laptop. Fast and easy. I especially like the XP operating system over Vista. First thing I noticed was the solid construction of this Netbook. It doesn’t feel cheap and made of plastic. The keyboard also had a well constructed feel that had just enough room without feeling cramped.

Now the software package was limited but did offer a 30 day trial version of the MS Office 2007. I had no issues connecting to my draft N wireless network and printer setup completed in less than a minute. I do recommend the larger 6 cell battery which is rated for about 8 hours. Depending on how you use it you may get less than 6 hours like me.

In conclusion I really like this unit. I did my research prior to purchasing. According to Cnet reviews, this was the unit to beat and I have to say they are right. The screen size is nice and the 160 gb is plenty of storage for me. My unit came with a free Netbook sleeve to carry it in and yes you can still use the sleeve with the 6 cell battery attached. I may add another gb of ram for a faster multi tasking experience. The web cam seemed to work well with Skype. Picture quality was ok. As mentioned by other users the mouse button location had a slight learning curve but wasn’t bad.

Note: I have yet to test the vga out connection and its resolution as I heard someone mention was a negative. Will update later.
