User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great Netbook
I bought my NC10 about a month ago now. I have been very pleased with it so far. I did upgrade the memory from 1GB to 2GB – it’s a very cost-effective upgrade with memory as cheap as it is now. It performs well, you can even do some light gaming on it. I mostly use it to surf the web, email, hulu.com, etc.

If your in the market for a Netbook, you can’t go wrong with the Samsung. And in reality, I’d dare say it’s one of the best ones on the market.

5 Stars Slick “mini” computer
I bought the NC10 for my wife to use at her “desk”; i.e. the kitchen table. It is small, lightweight, and easy to store when not use.

The screen is bright (with several settings) and easy to see. I like the Windows XP operating system since it is what I have on my other computers. Ergonomics are great; particularly the keyboard. I suppose the touch pad is fine but I don’t like them and bought a Digitech wireless mouse. To soon to know which my wife will prefer.

For web browsing and email this little guy works just as well as its bigger brothers (desktops and laptops). As a matter of fact it will become our travel computer. If I had found this sooner I would not have bought a laptop. Instead of the bulk/weight of a laptop the NC10 can be carried in a briefcase. It has a media player and the “My Documents” (including My Pictures) standard on XP. The screen is too small for me to use on a daily basis but fine for short time when away from home. You can also set up seperate settings for two (or more) people. When the computer starts we can choose between my wife or me.

But it does lack features found on full size computers. The biggest omission is a CD/DVD player. But you can buy a Samsung external CD/DVD drive which plugs right in with a USB port; you don’t need a seperate power source since it draws from the NC10. It also does not come with Windows Office and other software. The speakers are pitiful; not a problem for us but needs to be pointed out here.

Do buy the 2 GB memory card; it speeds up performance and is inexpensive. Even with my limited computer skills I swaped the cards in 5 minutes. Do read the “how to” in the User Guide included on the NC10 before swapping.

Price shop the heck out of the NC10; look beyond Amazon. I found the best deal after “googling” it. Paid under four bills. I noted while looking on Amazon today that price seems to very with color.

All in all, I’m very impressed with the Samsung. It is perfect for my wife as well as for travel. If I get heartburn over something, I’ll report back.

4 Stars cute! cute! and it works ok, too.
I’m far from a techie, so I really liked the cute pink color – even though my three year old son’s finger prints do tend to show.

This was my first netbook, so there were a few things that I don’t exactly care for, but I understand they’re what you get with a netbook. First, it was a little slow pulling webpages. We upgraded the memory, and that helped a lot. If you do this, be sure to check crucial’s website to make sure you’re getting the right one. Amazon recommended the wrong one to me. Second, the speakers are practically nonexistant. That’s not normally a problem for me, but be prepared. Finally, the screen is really tiny. Be sure you know exactly what 10.2 inches means. Again, all of these issues are with netbooks in general, not with my Samsung NC10. Overall, I think it’s a great (and cute!) little machine. The battery life is phenomenal.

4 Stars Really lovin’ my Samsung!!
As a nursing student, this netbook fit the bill! It’s light enough to fit into my purse or backpack. I get compliments on the pink color, but mostly I’m asked about its performance. While it is not a fast as my Mac, it is gets the job done. The keyboard is surprising comfortable. The only issue I don’t like is having to hit the function key for some letters on the keyboard. Anyone know how to change that function, no pun intended, PLEASE let me know.

5 Stars Samsung Netbook Shines!
I looked at a variety of netbooks and this one simply outshined them all. I have not been disappointed. It’s perfect for on the go and does everything it should. Samsung did an excellent job.

I upgraded to 2 gig of ram and the installation was simple.

Some advice from personal experience. I purchased a generic external USB Slim DVD CD R/RW Drives Burner Writer from ebay for $30 to watch DVD’s and play games. They are usually $40-$50 with shipping included (shipped from China) and downloaded the Intervideo XPACK after coupon for $12 and have had no problems. If the audio/video freezes plug in the power usb cord in addition to the usb cord for playing the device and this solves the problem. This download gives you the software and decoder allowing you to play your DVD with the Intervideo, Windows Media Player or Real Player.

ATT is the best wireless card reviewed by CNET. They did a wireless card showdown this week.

Oh, don’t forget to use both the Windows Update and Samsung Update Plus and download the updates on a regular basis. Very easy to use.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Lenovo IdeaPad S10 — Fine, capable unit
I did a lot of research and looked at a lot of units before selecting this one. I liked the construction quality, the styling, screen size, large disk, ease of memory expansion and screen brightness. All have proven to be great. It’s a solid unit, decent battery life and, of course, a great size. Can easily work in coach airline seats with this unit and even have room for a separate mouse. Which you’ll want because the negatives are the mouse (noisy, stiff) and the keyboard layout. Both easily overcome by taking time to adjust to it or using remapping software. It would also be nice to have BlueTooth, but maybe in the next version. Overall, I think it’s a really fine netbook and would have no problem recommending it.

5 Stars Great item
Having first purchased a Dell 9 inch and having to return it because the wi-fi did not work, I thought a little larger screen would be better. I am very satisfied with the Lenovo 10 inch netbook. I use this as a computer away from home. Light weight and great for travel.

5 Stars good buy for the money
I also bought the Asus 10 inch model with Linux before I got the S10 like another reviewer said. I sold my Asus in about 2 month ebcause frankly I really don’t know how to use Linux. I can surf internet fine by installing software on it isn’t so easy, and I just give up. The load time for the linux Asus was not as fast I thought it would be considering it’s linux and all. With the S10, I am pleasantly surprised it wasn’t loaded with crap like Dell, and I only uninstalled the anti-virus thing because I have another one. Other than that, nothing junky and not many programs on there at all.

I just bought mine (Lenovo sells the one with 6 cell battery now) and arrive today, yes it took a LONG time, about 1 month for them to ship. Once they ship it got here within 2 days. So far i am happy with it. The design, the feel, the quality of the keyboard and screen. Battery sticks out al ittle but I don’t mind it. XP loads up really fast, faster than Linux. ALl prgrams loads fast and well. The only initial problem I had was wifi set up. It keep saying about unable to authenticate certificate soemthing. Called tech support, and got an idiot who knows less about networking then me, give up, fixed the thing myself. It was only a matter of unchecking a box in the settings. After that everything was great. I have no problem with keyboard layout, track pad feels good even though it’s small. Clickers are nicely gone, not too tight or loose. Haven’t tried upgrade RAM yet, maybe some day. I am happy with the way it is now. SUper fast and looks great!

Also I bypassed the purchase of Acer (new 10 inch) for this one because the mouse/tracker on Acer is not great. I hate having the clicker on the left and right side of the mousepad. I like and am used to them being on the bottom. Also the mousepad on the acer model is even smaller.

4 Stars a lot of machine for $400
I am liking this Netbook, finding it to be fast and powerful enough for my needs at work and on the road. It is lightweight, attractive, and fun. I have had it a month now. Really good for travel and moving around, quick to pick up wireless options and get on-line. Two and a half hour battery, recharges in one hour. Nice long cord. No CD rom built in, so must use an external unit, or another computer to play disks, but with three USB portals, this is easy to negotiate. The only down-side for me has been learning to use the small rightside shift key…if your right pinky misses that little key, you find yourself moving along another line of type, and have to pause to make adjustments.

At just $400 (including sleeve, tax, and delivery), with such a light weight and small size, I love it.

5 Stars Excellent netbook
I looked at several brands of netbook before deciding on the Lenovo. I am very happy with my decision. While the keyboard is slightly smaller than other 10″ netbooks, it is certainly usable with a little adjustment (I am a touch-typer). The only bothersome oddity is the right shift key, as others have mentioned. That being said, the feel of the keyboard is much better than others in my opinion. In addition a new model is out now (the S10-2) with a better keyboard layout.

The place where the Lenovo shines above others, in my opinion, is in its fit and finish. Others seem to lack the attention to detail that this model has. For example, the keyboard on the HPs (I saw this several times) is mounded up on the left side and the shiny plastic over the screen is rippled. Annoying. And a lot of times the Asus keyboards registered false (or no) keystrokes. The MSI Winds like to tip over backwards. But the Lenovo is pretty solidly built, and it looks tastefully subdued like a good business machine should. Pretty nice if that’s your thing.

I found that it’s processor and hard drive are plenty fast for me even with “only” 1 GB of RAM installed. But I’m not a gamer and don’t care to watch videos on it, so I don’t really push the limits. The screen is pretty nice and is the full 1024×600.

The model I received included the Splash Top quick boot OS. This allows you to boot an appliance-like OS which has a browser (a rebranded and stripped down Firefox 2) a media player and a few other tools. It’s nice but it disables features like plugins for the browser, or the ability to download files, so there are limits to what you can do with it. Great if you want to check news & weather or quickly get directions on the way out the door.

If you’re interested, here’s how the hard drive was partitioned: 115 GB primary partition formatted FAT32 contained the Windows XP OS. I’m pretty sure FAT32 was chosen instead of the newer NTFS because it allows Splash Top to access media files you have obtained and stored using Windows. A second 30 GB partition formated NTFS shows up as drive D: in Windows, and there is a 3rd partition (hidden in Windows) used to store disk images for the One Key Restore system.

I wanted to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but the manual advises not to mess with the 115 or 15 GB partitions because it may cause the One Key Restore to stop working. So I decided to use part of the 30 GB partition to install Ubuntu. This actually seems to work out pretty well because Ubuntu has no problem easily accessing the FAT32 main partition natively. So you can store all your music, movies, photos and working files on this large partition and use them either in Windows or Ubuntu. Makes for a pretty good setup.

The install of Ubuntu was painless. Just follow the instructions on the Ubuntu site and it does pretty much the rest for you. Networking, sleep and hibernate, screen brightness and volume and all the other function keys worked without having to do any tweaking. Only the internal mic needs some help to get working, but instructions are available if you look for them on the web. The nice think about UNR is that it makes really good use of the limited screen area on these smaller computer. It also boots faster than Windows and seems generally snappier.

I would certainly recommend this model to anyone in the market for a netbook.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Very good, but not perfect.
This is a very good small laptop for the price. Well-built, clear and not difficult to read like smaller ones, fast enough for most uses, it can do most everything a larger laptop can do. However, there are some negatives. The touchpad is overly sensitive, so sometimes it is difficult to stay in place; using a mouse in much easier. No User’s Manual, no Cd drive with which to use support cd’s that come with it and for printer drivers, no protective sleeve, it is barebones. To have all of this would be worth another fifty dollars,I think. Nevertheless, I recommend it as the best netbook I could find, especially for the price. Richard

5 Stars great laptop
i had the acer aspire one, and then i saw this one. so returned it and it was the best decision i ever made! the screen is alot more crisp, and the form factor is a 100 times nicer. i was able to upgrade the ram to 2gb and overclock the cpu to 2ghz. and with a 250gb hard drive upgrade, got plenty of space for my stuff. totally recommend this laptop

4 Stars Great value for money
You can just grab it with 3 fingers, pop it into any ol bag and go anywhere and work with it. Yes, the screen is small, but that is the price to pay for flexibility. I wandered all over London during a flight layover of 8 hrs with this in a backpack and many other things. That would never have happened with any other laptop.

I’m having so much fun with this, that the only issue is battery life. The 2 hours is just not enough, and I don’t feel like carrying the charger around. So now I have to figure out how to solve that problem. I might put Linux on it, which would not be such a hog.

5 Stars A marvellous little machine!
I’ve had our U100 for about two months. I love it! It has the perfect screen size for my tired eyes (the white keys help with that, too). The way I use my computers, having both a wireless and a wired ethernet capability is a feature I appreciate. The hard drive is plenty large enough for me. The camera is great, too.

Soon after buying mine, I did do some remedial upgrades. I got a good quality Bluetooth dongle, added another gigabyte of memory, and a nine cell battery that gives it more than six hours of useful computing time. These upgrades cost about $100 in total. I hasten to point out, the upgrades weren’t essential, they just made a good thing even better for my situation.

My spouse used the webcam to talk with her family overseas using Google talk; she said it was just like being there. Her happiness by itself totally justified the purchase!

The MSI Wind series has an enthusiastic following of computer hobbyists. They have discovered many ways of enhancing the U100 for everyday use. Because of this following, I don’t think the Winds will soon join the ranks of orphaned hardware.

For those unfamiliar with the MSI name, I’ve bought their system components for years and always have been pleased with their quality and the way that MSI provides continuing support.

When I upgraded the memory, I carefully checked the internal components and the craftsmanship. I was impressed by both. Lots of name brand sub-components and everything carefully and thoughtfully laid out.

If all my purchases made me as happy as this one, I would indeed be a happy camper.

5 Stars Nice, white and fluffy
The MSI Wind netbook was my choice for a portable, feature-rich yet compact laptop for my sister. It has most if not all standard and extra features you’d expect from a modern-day netbook, decent size keyboard, low power consumption (also meaning you won’t get burned while holding the laptop), and a relatively large screen give the overall dimensions of the computer. Sister just loves it, as it perfectly fits her needs as a lightweight, network-aware but powerful enough laptop to use throughout the day, while on the move. And the appearance is nice and fluffy for a girl

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Great except for the
The Acer One currently on sale is great- small footprint, does everything I need. I bought it about a month ago for use at work, where the wireless networks are blocked, so I use a USB wireless modem device. No problem.

But it absolutely will not connect to the internet reliably using WiFi. I spent about 6 hours troubleshooting, and no way will it connect to my home network that 4 other machines share happily.

So, if you bought this needing Wifi connection, look for something else. The problems have not been fixed by ACER, because this machine has the latest BIOS and drivers.

Shame, as it’s perfect in every other respect, and I’m happy with mine. It’s a mystery to me why the company doesn’t correct it.

5 Stars I love it.
I think my Acer is great. I take it everywhere with me. There is a small whine when it first starts up sometimes, but it quickly stops. I can work around this for the convenience and the cost.

5 Stars Excellent Purchase
Ok so it’s been a week since I’ve had the Acer Aspire 150. Must say, I’m quite impressed. Certainly it’s not infallable, but it has easily found its place. Now I should start by stating the obvious: this is a netbook, not to be confused with a laptop, or in other words it is not a desktop replacement by any means. For those that are looking to use a laptop as their main computer, do not make it a netbook. If you are planning on using this for nothing more than surfing the internet, and other minor tasks such as word processing or playing music, then look no further. The Acer Aspire combines functionality with an affordable price, perfect for the budget minded. Now on to the specs…

Overall, the netbook package is nice, fairly slim (although I’ve seen slimmer). This is a point that will be up to personal preference, as many will complaign about the keys being too close together, or the touchpad being too small; however, my personal observation is that the keys are not significantly smaller, and mine came with a mini-mouse, easily fixing the touchpad problem. The speed is quite average amongst most netbooks with comparable specs. The wireless works quite well; at first I was dropping connection every minute or so, but after visiting the Acer website and updating the driver, it worked fine. The built-in webcam is a nice touch, works great with skype, and the quality isn’t too shabby (obviously not HD quality or anything of the like, but overall quite smooth, better than most I’ve used). The built-in speakers are ok for the size, but headphones would be much better. Battery life is quite good, mine averages 4 hours with use. Start up is quite fast; takes me about 20 seconds to load (without an anti-virus currently installed; I’m sure that will easily slow down performance). Much software had to be removed out the of box (McAfee, 3rd party software, etc), but it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, about 20 minutes of uninstalls, no messing with the registry or the like. XP runs smooth, have yet to try Windows 7, although I’m told it runs fairly well. Office 2007 runs smooth, Word, Excel, OneNote, and all.

It includes 3 USB ports, which fit items fairly snug, but no problems (would have been nice to have a firewire port). The included VGA out is almost vital. The screen has good quality, a little small for thos who are used to larger fonts, but for me works nice.

So, all in all, for the price, this item is well worth it. The hardware seems sturdy overall, the size and weight make this ultra-portable, and once again the price just makes it a great purchase.

1 Star Way too many problems
I’ve had way too many problems with this product right out the box. The screen did not work properly, then the SD Card slot, the the bluetooth. I’ve gone back to my old computer.

1 Star Disgusted over this purchase
I have never experienced such a negitive customer experience as I have with this product.

I am currently serving my country in Afghanistan. I ordered this computer and when it showed up it was defective. I worked with the on-line support folks and even spent my own money calling back to the customer support line. Never once was I told that the item could be replaced with a new one. I spent an entire week trying to fix the computer by taking directions from the Acer support techs. At first, they said I had to update “Flash” a new bios to the computer. This was a new computer and it already needs the bios replaced? I updated the Bios and this did not fix the machine. Then they wanted to send me a CD to reload the software. Well, they obviously did not do their homework because the computer does not come with a CD ROM drive.

So here I am in the middle of Afghanistan with a computer that keeps shutting down on it’s own….right after I start it.

This Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Netbook is loaded with thoughtful standard features to make your life a little easier. It has a Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of DDR2 667 memory, a 160GB hard drive and 1.3 megapixel integrated camera.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Well designed, inexpensive netbook.
I bought this mostly for my 10 year old daughter, and for my occasional use. I wanted something small, and relatively inexpensive (compared to a regular laptop). We have had it about two weeks and I’m very pleased with it.

Pros

*	The keyboard is smaller than a full size laptop but it still usable, even for my large hands. (extra large gloves are typically tight for me). I wouldn’t want to write a book with it, but for short periods of typing, such as blogging or e-maiing it works fine.

*	The response time is good. Don’t expect it to be as fast as a high performance laptop or desktop, but the speed is certainly acceptable. (and I’m the impatient type).

*	Although the Lenovo website says that face recognition software is not offered on this model, ours had it included. It works very well as long as the lighting is fairly good. You do not have to sign-in using the keyboard; just sit in front of the screen for a few seconds while it recognizes your face. It also takes a picture of anyone trying to access the laptop. If someone is trying to use it without your permission, you’ll be able to see who it was.

*	It comes with a Lenovo front end that sits on top of windows. It offers you icons for the internet, online gaming, etc. You can exit it to go to the normal Windows desktop.

*	It looks very sharp and is well designed. Ours is a deep red on the outside and white on the inside.

*	Battery life has been very good. I don’t have exact number but you should be able to get a few hours of internet use out of a charge.

*	It is very light and portable, yet seems sturdy.

Cons

*	These small laptops are called Netbooks for a reason. If you intend to use it for internet surfing, email, etc… it does fine. This is not the computer you want if you plan to run software that requires computing power and memory. Needless to say… this is probably not what you want to run Photoshop.

*	There is no built in CD or DVD drive.

You can read the Amazon description to see all of the specs and features, but it does come fairly well equipped for the price. For the last 15 years, all of my past computers were Dells, and I still like Dell. However this Lenovo model seemed to offer the most for the money.

4 Stars Awesome netbook!
I had this netbook for over a month and I’m loving it! The screen is the perfect size and having only 1 GB of ram is actually not that bad (even though I’m planning on upgrading to 2 GB). The only problem I had with the netbook was that it stated that it has 160 GB of hard drive but I’m only seeing about 130 (unless there is 30 more hidden somewhere) or maybe it’s just my netbook. That’s why I only give it 4 stars. Overall, this is my number one baby. I’ve got so many compliments from my family. The webcam was a nice touch, the quality was a lot better than I expected. Even though it’s mainly designed for internet, email, and music usage, I actually play my sims 2 on this thing and it runs great. I recommend this netbook if anyone is thinking of getting one.
