5 Stars Samsung NC20
I will compare to the NC10, the NC20 is bigger, heavier, less battery life but still good around 5:30 of regular use maybe more if you change the brightness on the screen settings, excellent screen resolution (1280 x 800)for 12.1″ !and better/higher sound for sure. Just be aware that the left side of the laptop generate a flow of mildly hot air. Of course the screen is the main thing here and I think is worth it if you want to use the laptop to see movies or read Open Office documents. It is very easy to open and upgrade the hard drive or the memory 2GB max. The trackpad has the same size of the NC10 black special edition but bigger than the regular NC10. The keyboard is great as the all NC10. note: They changed the position of the windows icon on the keyboard. The VIA Nano performs very similar to the Intel Atom.

5 Stars A great option
A 10.1 inches monitor was definitely something too small for my eyes, now I am 53… and for a 12.1 monitors you had to choose one of those expensive notebooks. But this Samsung NC20 appeared and I simply went for it without waiting for other customer reviews. I read some reviews on other sites, all of them OK, and followed my daughter’s advice: she has a 10.1 NC10, the pink one (perfect for a young girl) and is always telling marvelous things about her tiny netbook

Well, now I can start doing the same. It’s a great computer, perfect for what it is meant to.

The chasis is solid, the system keeps cold, has long battery life (5 hours or so, I am not enough disciplined to measure it with minutes and seconds), a clear and comfortable keyboard and a silent processor/disk

Two small cons:

1. The monitor is too glossy for my taste.

2. The cover traps all your fingerprints, mercilessly.

Best regards

Rodarias

5 Stars Perfect Netbook
I wanted a netbook or laptop to replace an old laptop we used in our kitchen. I wanted something that was …

1) Light weight and portable.

2) Easy to carry and/or pack when I travel.

3) Quick accessing the internet for news and email.

4) Would run Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

5) Had an easy to read screen, and

6) Cost less than $800.

I strongly considered 10″ netbooks by several manufacturers (Samsung, HP, Asus, etc.) but decided I wanted a larger screen after I found myself “leaning in” to read the screen on the 10″ netbooks. Laptops had bigger screens, but were LOTS heavier (>5.5 lbs) and would be much less convenient both in my kitchen and to travel with. Getting a 12-14″ screen in a light weight laptop or a Mac was going to easily cost me more than $1000. The Samsung NC20 fit my criteria the best. I was a bit apprehensive to buy it though as I was unable to see one locally. In the end, I decided to take the plunge.

Boy am I glad I did. This computer is simply great. Perfect size, very portable and light weight. Screen is easy to read and very bright. One complaint I had heard about the NC20 was that the speakers weren’t very good, but I would disagree with this; they’re fine! The keyboard is easy to use, even with my big fingers. Battery life is excellent. In addition, the setup was a breeze. I’ve set up a lot of computers in my time (both PC and Mac), and honestly this was by far the easiest (even easier than my Mac’s)! Microsoft Office went on fine, easy setup of my wireless network and file sharing with my desktop. I also loaded Norton Internet Security on it, and it runs just fine (no noticeable reduction in speed). It has handled everything I’ve given it just great!

I added a USB-CD/DVD drive and a USB-mouse (although it has built-in Bluetooth), and these work great. When purchasing I thought about upgrading the memory to 2GB but decided to wait and see. Now that I have it, I see no need for this currently (but it’s nice to have the option for the future).

My NC20 is currently sitting on my kitchen table, running Microsoft Office just fine and accessing my emails and the internet like a champ! If you’re looking for a secondary computer, laptop or netbook for doing simple tasks and travel like I was, I would highly recommend the NC20.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Cute litte web surfer
I bought this specifically for web browsing. Mostly use it to check my fav websites while watching evening tv, uploading/dowloading pictures and to and from work on the bus.

4 Stars MSI Wind U100 – decent little machine
First thing that I found when I opened the package is the itty bitty laptop and the additional memory that I ordered. I STRONGLY recommend spending the extra 15 to 20 bucks to get the extra memory – it makes a massive difference in the performance of any machine.

The issue I had with the memory is that the laptot doesn’t seem to have any place to install it. The documentation doesn’t show where it goes. I found a video on Youtube showing how and where to install it. The apparent terrible thing about upgrading the memory is that it requires removing the back cover. One of the screws is covered by a security tape that says “warranty is void if tampered”.

I contacted tech support. It took two calls. Both times they answered within 5 minutes. The first call, oops, they dropped the phone and accidentally hung up on me. I got the same tech that did this on the second call. The tech support agent said that it is alright to remove the sticker to get to the screw. They have reviewed their policy and it will not void the warranty. They have stopped placing the sticker on new systems. With the cover off, I removed the sticker altogether and got the residue off with goo gone.

The tech support agent said that nothing else is user or locally serviceable. Not even the hard drive.

Next, I backed up the hard drive as delivered using Norton Ghost.

I then replaced the operating system by installing Windows Vista Ultimate to test the capability. It ran just fine. The Vista Performance rating gave it a 1 for the graphics card – or lack of.

I installed XP Pro. Office 2007 Ultimate. Joined the laptot to the domain. It is truly not a desktop replacement, but my wife likes it a lot!

I don’t know why they don’t offer XP Professional as an option for these machines. XP home is simply a broken version.

I wonder what OS these laptot manufacturers will begin shipping when Microsoft finally discontinues XP.

5 Stars great – love it!
I love this laptop! It has everything I need to surf the web and the battery has a long life. I’m especially impressed withthe keyboard, which is large for such a small computer. The heart design is very subtle.

5 Stars Great little machine!!
Originally leaning towards an HP mini I decided to go with this little one after discovering all its great features and tons of great reviews. It’s light, fast, has a great screen, the keyboard rocks, I have no problem with the mouse bar and I just love it! I drag it all over the place with me, it into the kitchen rather than printing a recipe and it worked like a charm, into the family room to surf, outside to work, everywhere – battery lasts forever and it doesn’t get hot like my Thinkpad I use for work.

5 Stars Portable Wind Netbook from MSI
Excellent product very happy with it, bought it for my wife, delighted with the product

I installed in it OS X 10.5.5 and works very good. There are some issues with the sound but

it can be worked out by buying a very cheap ( 8 dollars ) USB adaptor.

I have several Mac boxes at home and in the office and I happy that now I also have

a MacBook Nano

5 Stars love it!
I love my new laptop. It is easy to carry to school with all of my books. Works great too!

5 Stars great little product
[[ASIN:B001LNUJ5Q MSI Wind U100-280US 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 6 Cell Battery, XP Home) Pink]

I did some comparison particularly with the samsung n10 the biggest difference seem to be the keyboard, mainly the right shift key placement on the samsung (less awkward was the sentiment) and a tad longer battery life. But I find the Wind keyboard to be quite comfortable (especially for the difference in price). I will mainly be using this at home so battery life (extra 45 mins or so on samsung) is not a great issue for me either.

So far, I love my Wind and I really love the PINK.

4 Stars MSI Wind versus Acer Aspire One
Let me start off by saying I have owned both of these laptops so I can make a good comparison.

I bought the Acer Aspire One about a month ago. It is very pretty and stylish. The battery life was almost seven hours and the keyboard keys were very responsive and had a nice feel to them. However it did have some problems. I noticed that the cooling fan on the Acer was abit loud and was noticably slower while using for internet than my other laptops.

Also about a day after I bought it you would hear a beep about once every 30-45 minutes from the system board so it had to be sent back as faulty.

I guess you are wondering if I am reviewing the Acer or the MSI at this point? Well I am reviewing both.

Now as for the MSI Wind. I received it a few days ago and yes it was more money but after using it for some time it was well worth it. The screen can display full web pages. It seems like just the slightly larger screen on the MSI makes a huge difference in viewing ease.

The battery last about 4.5-5 hrs on the MSI still very good and the keyboard is spaced better the the Acer but the keys are somewhat mushy and don’t feel as responsive but can get used to it. I also found out that enen though both the MSI and Acer share the same cpu and memory size the MSI Wind was noticably fast in all respects including internet use. What I did not like about the MSI is that it is a little tippsy when on your lap if not carefull it could possibly tip over. That would be really bad.

PROS: MSI larger screen displays full web pages.

Screen is much easier to view than the Acer

Keys are spaced better than the Acer

Battery life is 4.5-5 hrs

Much quiter than the Acer both fan and hardrive noise

Feels much better build quality than the Acer

Surfs web faster than the Acer.

The speakers on the MSI sound better and get louder than the Acer

Comes with a really nice white with pink beading protective bag.

Much nicer bag than the Acer non-padded sleeve.

CONS: Not as stlyish and pretty as the Acer

battery has slightly less run time than the Acer

Cost more than the Acer

Can be somewhat tippsy on your lap

I would for sure recommend the MSI Wind

5 Stars Perfect for its purposes!!
I bought this netbook for my daughter who’s 13 and pink in every sense, and I don’t regret it. It is perfect! It works great, it’s fast, no problems at all with internet, or even the bluetooth. The screen is 10″, so it’s a little bigger than the usual 8.9″, and the keyboard is soft and easy to work with. Sound is ok, nothing extraordinary but if you want something else there’s always the chance to connect speakers. Battery is great, worked for over 5 and a half hours. In All an excellent purchase! I recommend it!

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Small enough to carry everywhere, but not a toy
I am thrilled with my Aspire One. I got in in black back when that didn’t cost extra. I am using in place of a 15″ business-grade HP laptop. The HP didn’t break or anything, I just got tired of lugging it around.

THE PROS:

The hardware is surprisingly adequate. It feels a lot like a high-end notebook from four years ago. The analog video out works as well as analog ever does, which I have confirmed with both 20″ (1600×1200) and 23″ (2048×1152) monitors. It can drive one of these AND its own screen without a hiccup. The screen resolution of 1024×600 works well for a browser, especially if you go full-screen on the pages, and the pixel density is crazy (bad for “old eyes” who may want the 10″ version instead, good for the 20-somethings and 30-somethings). It has enough speed to run MS Office acceptably, though the screen really isn’t big enough to do anything serious — but I say the same thing about the HP notebook. It’s not great at anything, but it has no glaring weaknesses either.

It has JUST enough CPU and graphics muscle to run eyecandy like Milkdrop on the built-in screen, though you’ll have to compromise (settings and/or frame rate) a bit to drive a larger screen.

Audio quality is excellent using external speakers.

Battery life with the three-cell is two to three hours depending what I’m doing with it. Playing a movie would probably drain it in two hours, but that’s generally long enough for a movie. The six-cell option does double this capacity if two to three hours just isn’t enough, but it also sticks out of the back in somewhat of an odd manner and adds weight, which is why I decided against it.

The keyboard is laid out in a manner that avoids the annoyances of so many other netbooks — namely, CTRL and the right SHIFT are exactly where you’d expect them to be, and the arrow keys are small but well-placed. The keyboard is quite usable for being 89% size, and does not feel cheap or flimsy.

It has three USB ports, WiFi, VGA, a 100mbit Ethernet port, and TWO memory card slots. The left one is SD/SDHC only, the right supports a few other card types as well as SD/SDHC.

Due to the modest power demands, the brick is fairly small and light compared to most notebook bricks. The brick and cords, the mini-mouse, and the Aspire One all fit in a lunch-size cooler bag… with lunch still in it.

It looks really cool, once all the fingerprints are wiped off.

It gets warm in use, but not enough to be worrisome or even particularly uncomfortable. It runs much cooler than the HP.

This little computer is not a toy, and it doesn’t fit in your pocket (unless you wear cargo pants, I don’t), but it’s quite easy to take along for whatever purpose. I often go to lunch with the Aspire One in my hand and a mini-mouse in my pocket, or streamcast a game when I’m cooking or in the bathroom or anywhere else I can’t stare at a fixed TV.

THE CONS:

In the few months I’ve had it, I’ve had ONE problem: it started shutting itself off, either while booting up or shortly after. I did a bit of googling and found this is due to the CPU fan not turning on, and the machine shuts off to protect itself. However, there is a fairly simple procedure to fix it: unplug it and remove the battery, hold the power button for 20 seconds, reattach the power but not the battery, start it up — it may shut off one more time — then put the battery back in. It should work fine after that. Apparently I’d been tossing it around a bit TOO casually and may have caused this, but it’s fixed.

I had to update the WiFi driver. It was flaky out of the box, but it works much better after the update.

The lid and screen are REALLY glossy, and are thus complete fingerprint magnets. The built-in screen is only 16-bit color. It took me quite a while to notice the difference so this is not a major problem, and external monitors are not limited to 16-bit color.

No optical drive. Deal, it’s a netbook.

The built-in speakers suck. See above point.

The trackpad is mediocre, and the buttons are on the sides (undoubtedly to save precious front-to-back space), but it works, especially once it breaks in. It starts out requiring a lot of pressure, but this eases fairly quickly. I’ve never gotten comfortable with ANY trackpad, so I do not consider this a serious flaw.

SUMMARY:

If you are looking for a small, affordable, and all-around useful replacement for a regular notebook, and don’t need blazing speed, this will fit the bill. If you expect to add a bunch of extra plug-in hardware when you get to work, it will still fit the bill. It will mostly just work out of the box but could use a bit of tweaking to perform optimally.

4 Stars LOVE IT!!! LOVE IT!!! LOVE IT!!!
I love this lil’ notebook… Easy to tote around, easy to get on line, easy to understand and use… Love the large hard drive, can store lots of movies on the notebook alone, because the only down side is there’s no c.d. drive… But save all your stuff on the 160gb hard drive or get a portable drive, and it’s just as good as anything else… Thank you to my BF who actually LISTENS to WHAT I WANT…

5 Stars Everything I wanted
Opened this and it worked just the way it should right from the start! Only had it a few days so far, and for the price I’m dazzled. Only regret is the Mac doesn’t make something this small for a small price. I bought this, not because I needed it, but for the price it was too good to not experiment with and enjoy the extreme practicality of all it does.

2 Stars Buyer Beware
I have read many reviews extolling the virtues of this computer and after having it for a few days the glitter quickly dimmed.

{1} It’s much slower than people would lead you to believe and I’m not talking about the usual lag time for a XP to boot up, I’m saying it take longer for programs like Chrome to boot and when it does it takes it much longer for it to complete a page. I didn’t expect a super fast computer but from reading many of these misleading reviews my expectations were quickly a little higher than what is delivered.

{2}Of course you could always upgrade your memory to speed things up a bit. That is until you have to completely disassemble the enire computer and I mean take it apart, not just remove a cover or a back, do a search and watch a video on what you have to do to replace the memory, this alone will make you think about buying this netbook.

5 Stars Packs a whole lot of functionality; and performance is v.g.
I bought the white 8.9″, HDD XP version, 6-cell (pretty much what’s on this page) for my son’s 12th birthday. I had done a lot of research, and in fact, actually bought the Vaio lifestyle pc and returned it after very poor performance/speed. I did not have great expectations for this little guy, but it was worth experimenting. Well, much to our surprise, this is an amazing machine with a very comfortable keyboard, bright screen (that you’ll probably want to adjust down), and pretty darn fast!! At first, when you set it up, it seems slow to get to the desktop, but that’s only for the set-up. We also loaded Skype, and within 10 minutes, we were calling each other with full video, etc. I had heard that with the Linux version of this machine, there is trouble with the built-in recorder, but not on the XP version — it worked “out of the box”. And, I thought I had to buy a microphone, but no, it’s right there, bult in on the side. I just can’t say enough about this machine.

5 Stars Surprise, surprise, surprise
This 901 has given lots of surprises. First surprise, it has the built-in bluetooth. In the spec, there is no one word mentions it. Second surprise, it supports dual monitor. Third surprise, it includes good software such as Microsoft Works and StarOffice. The only downside the 8GB SSD is slow. The computer may pause once in a while if the 8GB SSD is running. To get the reasonable performance, you may need to invest another $90 to $200 to upgarde the SSD HD. To me, I bought this one for email and internet browsing. I do not want to put much money to it. I just replaced the 8GB SSD with a Super Talent 32GB SATA SSD that only costs $87.

After upgarding the RAM and SSD, I paid about $400 for this 901. Some may say it costs as much as the 1000HE with a 160GB HD and 10″ LCD. Yes, it is true, but I still like the size of the 901.

4 Stars Lean, mean and green!
I bought this little netbook to replace my larger, heavier one basically for emailing, browsing, writing, etc. I love the color and the size. Has lots of great features. It fits in my current purse. The small keyboard definitely takes some getting used to and the touch pad is extremely sensitive! I am going to buy a small mouse to use with it. I have mistakenly sent several emails without meaning to by lightly going over the surface. You will need a lot more memory. I bought the recommended 2G memory. I didn’t attempt to install it; asked the engineer at my work to install it for me along with Microsoft Word which I needed since I am writing a book. He confirmed it is a good netbook. All in all, I love my Eee PC! OH, BTW, it comes with a nice black soft case so don’t order the green one they recommend unless you just want it! I didn’t realize it came with one and ordered the green one so now I have a spare!

4 Stars Asus Eee 901
I am happy with my purchase. The keys are small. Takes some getting used to. The unit is small and compact. That is the whole idea. The color sweet pea is nice.

4 Stars Fantastic for computing on the go
It was a Wired article about netbooks that sold me on the idea by comparing full-sized, full-power laptops (like the one I’m typing this on now) with SUVs, and netbooks with more efficient just-what-you-really-need compact cars. And the truth is, the vast majority of the time all I need is this netbook. People have an SUV for the one day a year they need all that cargo space or room for five people, but there’s the other 364 where they’re spending a fortune to move one person and a briefcase. But if you can’t afford to have two cars, you can probably afford to add a netbook to your computer collection, so while you travel you have something light, easy, with a long battery life, sturdy so you won’t worry so much about jostling it, and fully functional.

Much is made of the size of the keyboard and I know a lot of people try it and find it unsuitable for typing, and add on a roll-out keyboard. But I think a lot of those people just didn’t try it long enough. After a few hours I really can type at almost my full speed (and that’s about 60-80wpm) on it, and I can move between it and my full-sized keyboards without problems. If anything, I have a harder time with the touchpad, even though I have long experience with touchpads. A Bluetooth mouse works a treat to address that without impacting portability.

While the lightness and compactness are much ballyhooed, and the longer battery life is oft-cited, what’s really impressive to me about this has been the sense that it’s solid and sturdy. I’ve owned a dozen laptops in my time and most of them eventually succumbed to some problem with the screen, often in the hinge, leaving me feeling like I had to treat it extra gingerly. Maybe it’s the smaller size and weight, maybe it’s the better construction, but the Eee feels like I just don’t need to think about that.

In fact, I took my Eee with me on a short vacation recently, and in addition to using it extensively in the hotel, restaurants, etc., I used a copy of Microsoft Streets & Trips on it with a USB GPS. It was so much nicer than either a full laptop (so heavy, running hot on my lap, feeling fragile, and struggling with power adapters) or a dedicated GPS (so limited, no mouse or keyboard, awkward software and interface, small screen). I think the Eee is an ideal GPS unit, and not least because when you get there it also can do everything else.

About the color, it must be said that it’s pretty icky. It’s not just a green usually associated with baby food, or what comes up after babies eat baby food, it also has a pattern of pixellated leaves on it that just looks like a bad smudge. The inside is white and has the same pattern in the same green. That said, it’s better than plain old white or black. But I wish they’d do a nice blue, or the red model wasn’t always out of stock and priced too high, or even a nicer green. They’ve realized we want some colors, I don’t know why they don’t make more of them.

One final word: if you’re going to use an SDcard or thumbdrive to move your important data between your Eee and another computer, by leaving the data on that medium all the time, invest in a higher-performance card like the SANdisk Extreme III. I didn’t think it mattered, one SDcard is the same as another, right? But it really does matter a lot. And they’re really not that much more expensive.

4 Stars Good but hard to type
This is a good net book. Really nice, cute, and worth the money I paid. It’s just a little too small to type on sometimes, but once you’re used to it. It’s fine.

The processor will sacrifice speed for battery life sometimes, so the machine may exhibit temporary freezes sometimes.
